Directions: Create a new thread labeled with your name. In that post, choose 5 of the following questions and respond thoughtfully in writing. Post your responses in your thread, and be sure to include the question you are answering for each post!
Response: When you have finished with your responses, you must respond to 3 classmates, choosing 1 of their answers to respond to.
Responses should include the following for full credit:
1. A minimum of 3 sentences
2. Examples from the book or real life (these do not necessarily need to be quotes, but they should be specific examples)
3. An explanation of why you believe this, or how the author accomplishes something
4. A thoughtful explanation of your thoughts on the question as a whole
When you are finished with this component, you will move on to the "response" portion of the assignment.
Questions:
1. Are you willing to give up your privacy if constant government surveillance means living in a safer country? Does America seem to be willing to give up their privacy? Why?
2. What are some of the ways that the government controls the people of Oceania? Is this level of government involvement okay if it means it serves a greater purpose?
3. How does technology advance the Party’s agenda in 1984?
4. Is technology today more or less advanced than it is in the book? Is this a good or a bad thing?
5. How does technology allow people to violate other people’s freedoms? Is the loss of privacy partially self-imposed?
6. What is Winston’s job at the Ministry of Truth? How does he contribute to the Party’s causes? Why is this contradictory to who he is?
7. Are we "Proles" or "Party Members"?
8. What is the goal of Newspeak? Do you believe that this is an effective method of control?
9. When people are stripped of their ability to express a thought, do they lose the ability to formulate one?
10. Does our society feature any forms of “Newspeak”? Is our language today more advanced or more simplified than in the past?
11. What does Winston mean by, “Orthodoxy is unconsciousness?” (Orwell 49)
12. “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.” What does this quote mean? Do you agree with it?
13. In Chapter 8, Winston is walking through the Proles’ section of Oceania and hears a great disturbance. He believes they are starting an uprising, but comes to find that they are really fighting over saucepans. He reflects that they are putting all their energy into things like fighting for saucepans when they could start a revolution and make real change. What does this say about the power of poverty to keep people held down? Do you see this reflected in our world? How?
14. Winston says: “I understand how; I do not understand why.” What is he trying to determine? Do you have any ideas of what the answer this query may be at this point?
