What are some of the ways that the government controls the people of Oceania? Is this level of government involvement okay if it means it serves a greater purpose?
oceania uses telescreens, thought police, restricted marraige, and cruel punishment. the telescreens, thought police and cruel punishment give the feeling of zero freedom and living in constant fear. marraige is one of humanity's most important personal aspects they can control but when that's taken away there's more rebellion.
What is Winston’s job at the Ministry of Truth? How does he contribute to the Party’s causes? Why is this contradictory to who he is?
Winston's job is to erase or vaporized people from exsistence. this contributes to the party by helping brainwash other people about the truth. in my opinion his feelings about the party just contradict the fact that this should be his job, his job fuels his anger and distrust of the party.
Are we "Proles" or "Party Members"?
i think in a way we are a mixture of both. most people in this day in age do indulge in alcohol, pornography and many other things proles are aloud. on the other hand we can be like party members in the sense where some people put themselves above others on a scale of importance.
When people are stripped of their ability to express a thought, do they lose the ability to formulate one?
winston has expressed numerous times that he fears confrontation with the thought police because he has committed the crime on several occasions. therefore he has the ability to think anyway that he pleases and so can everyone else. the question is will they?
In Chapter 8, Winston is walking through the Proles’ section of Oceania and hears a great disturbance. He believes they are starting an uprising, but comes to find that they are really fighting over saucepans. He reflects that they are putting all their energy into things like fighting for saucepans when they could start a revolution and make real change. What does this say about the power of poverty to keep people held down? Do you see this reflected in our world? How?
winston is putting blame/judging other people for not doing what he dosent have the gut so do. winston can be a tad hypocritical in my opinion. poverty can distract people from what their potential can lead to.
