1. Are you willing to give up your privacy if constant government surveillance means living in a safer country? Does America seem to be willing to give up their privacy? Why?
I would not be willing to give up my privacy for a safer country. Giving up my privacy will not make the country a safer place, it will give the government more control than they need and it would not be better for the lives of the citizens. America does not seem to be willing to give up their privacy. The United states of America's purpose is to give people a place to live in freedom so people are not up for losing it.
2. What are some of the ways the government controls the people in Oceania? Is that level of government involvement okay if it means it serves a greater purpose?
The government of Oceania controls it's people in many ways. They constantly are watched by telescreens, have their children spy on them, have hidden microphones, and have spies who tell on you for little things. That level of government involvement is not okay, even if it serves a greater purpose.
3. How does technology advance the party's agenda in 1984?
Technology advances the party's agenda in 1984 with telescreens and hidden microphones to spy on the people of Oceania. The party would not be able to spy on and keep so much control without the help of technology.
8. What is the goal of newspeak? Do you believe that this is an effective method of control?
The goal of newspeak is to limit the vocabulary of the citizens of Oceania and to limit thoughtcrime. The party does not want people to be able to express themselves and all the English words do not help. By limiting the amount of words people know, it would mean they don't know anything to even think about which would lead to thoughtcrime.
5. How does technology allow people to violate other people's freedoms? Is the loss of privacy partially self-imposed?
Technology allows people to violate the freedom of others in many ways. First of all, people violate their own freedom by posting everything about their lives on the internet where strangers can see it, and second of all, people can find information about others by just googling their name. The loss of privacy is self-imposed in some cases. If somebody complains because someone else knows or stalks them on the internet, i believe it is partially their fault because they are so open to telling people about their everyday life, but people can also steal your info, whereas it is not your fault.
