1. What is the goal of Newspeak? Do you believe that this is an effective method of control?
The goal of newspeak is to eliminate any thought crime by erasing the english language. I believe that this is an extremely effective method of control. The characters in the book even have conversations about what newspeak is going to do and why.
2. When people are stripped of their ability to express a thought, do they lose the ability to formulate one?
Yes, people can't form thoughts if they don't have the knowledge to and everyone will lose the ability to formulate them eventually. that is the goal of newspeak.
3. Are you willing to give up your privacy if constant government surveillance means living in a safer country? Does America seem to be willing to give up their privacy? Why?
No, I am not willing to give up any of my privacy to live in a safe country because if we give up our privacy then the government will have full control over us. America does seem willing to give up their privacy because in so many ways we kind of already have, the government has tapped into our electronic privacy and more ways that most of us probably don't even know about.
4. How does technology advance the Party’s agenda in 1984?
The party uses technology to surveillance their people so that they don't miss a single a thing and are able to always keep a close eye on each and every one of them. Telescreens are everywhere, they watch people while they eat, sleep & work. The party even has screens on their walls that show a woman doing exercises in the morning and the woman is interactive she will yell at you if you don't do something right.
5. Is technology today more or less advanced than it is in the book? Is this a good or a bad thing?
technology today is more advanced than it is in the book and it's a bad thing. if the government wanted to control our every move through technology they most definitely could and we would be under a more strict enforcement than those in the book. We have so many people who can advance technology in a matter of days if the government decided that we should have more too.
