2. What are some of the ways that the government controls the people of Oceania? Is this level of government involvement okay if it means it serves a greater purpose?
A: The government controls the people by changing things that happened in the past to make the Party look good. Also they have the people so trained that they think that the Party “raised” the chocolate ration. I don’t believe that level of governmental involvement is necessary even if it is for a greater purpose.
5. How does technology allow people to violate other people’s freedoms? Is the loss of privacy partially self-imposed?
A: It allows them to tap into people’s phones or other technology. I believe the loss of privacy is self-imposed because people are attached to their electronics and don’t always want to give them up.
6. What is Winston’s job at the Ministry of Truth? How does he contribute to the Party’s causes? Why is this contradictory to who he is?
A: His job is to bassically rewrite history and to make the Party look as though they are always right and that they are doing good things. This is contradictory to who he is because he has second thoughts on things that the Party does, such as the chocolate rations supposedly being raised by 25 grams.
7. Are we "Proles" or "Party Members"?
A: Depending on how you look on things most of us are like the proles, because the government isn’t always doing things for our perspective. On the other hand, we are like the Party members because we follow our government and support things that we may not even understand.
8. What is the goal of Newspeak? Do you believe that this is an effective method of control?
A: The goal of Newspeak is to destroy words that can be used against the Party as “Thought-crime.” I believe it is an effective way to control the people because the children of the Party will only learn the new shortened words and not any words to bring down the Party.
